New to marquee hire?

Marquee hire is a mindfield of questions, so we have put together an outline of what questions you should be asking when you approach a marquee hire company.

Size of marquee

As a general rule of thumb, for a buffet event: a minimum of 8 square feet per person, and for a seated event: a minimum of 15 square feet per person. You will need further consideration for bars, dancefloor, kitchen. Ask the hire company to suggest sizes based on your criteria.

Type of marquee

Marquees fall into two categories, framed and the older style marquees which contain a central pole, with guyropes around the periphery. Whilst these may look prettier, you have the disadvantage of less workable area inside, and the high risk of tripping over the guys. Frame marquees are much more flexible and can serve as an 'extension' to a building if the space is suitable. Because they need no pegs or guy ropes, 'framed' marquee structures can easily butt up against the side of a house.

Hire period

The cost of the marquee is largely dictated by the assembly and disassembly, most companies state a two day hire period, with additional days at a vastly reduced rate (assuming your booking doesn’t cross over two weekends). Marquees are cheaper to hire during the week, and more expensive on the weekend.

Site survey

Modern marquees can be put up on sloping or uneven ground, our pre-site survey will ensure that you are made aware of any ground works necessary or site limitations.

Site damage

Putting a marquee on a lawn will temporarily fade, but recovery will be swift depending on the duration of hire. With non framed marquees, due to guyropes, the risk of damage around the surrounding area is greater so consider an additional ten feet around the marquee when planning the site. Consider if there are any cables or pipes running underground as the marquee will need to be secured.

Time of year

Marquees with modern day heating are suitable for all year use, but consider adding porches, wipe mats on the entrances if there is a risk of rain. For flooring, insist that the hire company does a full site survey in advance and suggests flooring suitable for the time of year, mitigating the danger of flood damage. Ensure marquees are made in accordance with EC Safety Standards and manufactured to withstand wind loading of up to 60 mph and securely anchored.

Ancillary services

Make sure you consider, power requirements, band, lighting, kitchen equipment, toilets and washroom facilities

Booking

Insist on a detailed breakdown of the quotation before you pay for the marquee. Most companies accept a 10-20% deposit to secure the booking with full payment on the day of erection.

Site assembly

Clearly state to the booking company what time they can come and you’re your marquee down, you will want to make the most of the time available and perhaps host a small reception on day 2.
